3 Questions to Ask Before Finalising Your Floor Plan
If you're renovating or building a home, finalising your floor plan is one of the most exciting (and overwhelming) moments. It’s the foundation that everything else — lighting, finishes, furniture — builds on. But too often, decisions are made based on room sizes, Pinterest inspiration, or builder templates alone.
To create a layout that feels good to live in (not just good on paper), ask yourself these three essential questions before you hit “approve.”
1. How do you actually live day to day?
Do you love slow mornings at the breakfast bar? Need a quiet space to work from home? Prefer privacy between bedrooms and shared zones?
Your layout should support how you move through your space, not just where things go. Think about:
Your morning and evening routines
Storage access and drop zones
Traffic flow and transitions between rooms
2. Are you following a trend, or designing for you?
It’s easy to be influenced by what’s trending—open shelving, arched doorways, built-in banquettes. But the best floor plans are rooted in personal lifestyle and long-term enjoyment, not just aesthetics.
Ask yourself: Would I still love this design in five years? Is this feature practical for my day-to-day?
3. Will this layout still work in 5–10 years?
Designing for the present is important—but future-proofing is key. Will this layout still suit your life if:
Your family grows or shifts?
You start working from home full-time?
Your mobility or lifestyle changes?
Small layout tweaks now can prevent major renovations later.
A thoughtfully designed floor plan isn’t about perfection, it’s about creating a space that supports how you live now and next.
