Are You Designing for Now or for What’s Next?
When you’re in the thick of designing a home, it’s easy to focus on what’s trending or what looks good on a Pinterest board.
But great design isn’t about following trends. It’s about building a space that will actually support your lifestyle — now and into the future.
Before you sign off on your layout, I always recommend asking a few key questions:
1. Will this layout still work in 5 years?
Think beyond today’s needs. A nursery today might become a home office down the track. Open-plan living might need more privacy as the kids grow older. Good design adapts to your life, it doesn’t lock you in.
2. Does it support how you actually live?
Your home should work on busy Monday mornings and slow Sunday afternoons.
Ask yourself:
How do we move through this space every day?
Where do we spend the most time?
Are there pinch points or underused zones?
3. Will it flow through life’s changes?
Designing with intention means creating spaces that feel calm, intuitive and easy to live in, even when life is hectic or full.
Think about everything from how natural light hits your work-from-home zone, to whether the laundry is in a location that makes sense for your routine.
If you’re feeling unsure about whether your plans are hitting the mark, my Floor Plan Review service was made for this exact moment.
I’ll walk through your drawings with fresh perspective, highlight what’s working, and flag any opportunities to improve flow, function or flexibility — all before it’s too late (or too expensive) to make a change.
Because smart changes now can save a world of compromise later.
